Weather over Wallace Idaho Today

"Wallace Idaho has the best four season climate in the world."

Wallace Idaho has the best four season climate in the world. This is my honest opinion after living here for 24 years, following my career as a scientist in western Montana, eastern Oregon, Calgary, Denver, Massachusetts, upstate and downstate New York, New Hampshire, northern California, and Bremen, Germany.
  • Usually only a handful of days above 90°F each summer; temperatures over 100°F are very rare; even the hottest days cool dramatically at night.
  • Usually only one or two days below 10°F each winter; night time temperatures rarely below 0°F.
  • Enough rain to keep streams flowing all year long.
  • Not enough rain to cause flooding (or depression).
  • Low humidity on mostly sunny days; very dry powder snow falls in the mountains around us.
  • Snow line normally just above town; snow removal from village streets is very efficient.
  • Mountain snowfall is usually significant, as shown by the snowfall logs and commentaries compiled for both ski resorts for the 2001/02 through 2017/18 seasons. Currently, the 2017/18 ski season is predicted to produce 115% of normal snowfall.
  • No tornados or high wind events... or earthquakes.

During the winter, see the Snowfall Forecast page for current regional weather, expected snowfall and snow quality maps. This page also now incorporates PRINTABLE Ten Day Weather Forecasts for both Ski Areas.

Mullan is a little mining town six miles east of Wallace on Interstate 90. Six miles further, at Exit 0, is Lookout Pass and Montana. The weather station at Mullan is actually located on Beacon Mountain, elevation 6026 feet, overlooking Lookout Pass Ski Area. Beacon Mountain is similar in elevation to Kellogg Peak, 6300 feet, and Wardner Peak, 6200 feet, at Silver Mountain Ski Area, located above Kellogg about 24 miles to the west on I-90.

So Wallace, at an elevation of 2728 feet, is always warmer than Mullan, elevation 3250. On the other hand, Coeur d'Alene, elevation 2127 feet, 40 miles west of Wallace on I-90 over Fourth of July Pass and beside the Lake, is usually, but not always, warmer.

Note that Idaho is on Pacific Time and Montana is on Mountain Time. The information shown in the above tables was provided by AccuWeather by subscription.

However, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here is what Interstate 90 looks like for those leaving Wallace and heading east to Mullan and Lookout Pass right now. Notice that Wallace is just out-of-sight around the bend and that the camera's time stamp doesn't care that it is daylight savings during the winter.
